Chapter Seventeen

Jenna leaned against the door frame, watching her daughter sleep in the biggest bed, and nicest bedroom, that she'd ever been in.

It was seven in the evening, too early for bedtime, but Gracie had crashed as soon as they'd settled into Chase's extra house.

Zach was also asleep in a nursery that Chase and Quintin had put together in record time, assembling baby gear from the other Stocktons.

They'd agreed not to tell any of the other Stocktons that Caleb was back, due to the danger hunting him. Caleb had said he wanted to figure out more about the danger he was bringing before exposing anyone else. The more people who knew he was there, the more likely that the folks hunting him would hear about it.

But Jenna knew that wasn't the reason.

The reason Caleb had delayed meeting the rest of his family was because he wasn't ready.

She'd felt his tension the moment Chase and Quintin had met them at the house. There was awkwardness between the three men. Strangers who had once been brothers. Stilted conversation where there had, presumably, once been the natural flow between siblings.

"Jenna." His hands slid over her shoulders.

She knew she should push him away, but his touch felt too good. She closed her eyes, absorbing the warmth of his touch. "I like that," she whispered.

"Like what?"

"You touching me. It's been a long time."

She heard his low chuckle as he continued to rub her shoulders. "Gracie asleep?"

"Yep."

"Zach, too." He was quiet for a moment as he continued to rub her shoulders. "Thanks for staying. I need you guys with me."

She smiled. "That's what Gracie said. She'll be happy to know she was right."

"I mean it." He kept up with the massage, which was beginning to unwind the tension she'd been holding so long. "How are you doing?"

She smiled at his question. Danny had never asked her how she was doing. Or if he had, it hadn't been for many years. So maybe things hadn't been as all right as she'd thought. Or maybe her needs had changed. "I'm fine."

"Fine?" Caleb laughed softly. "That's not an answer."

"Of course it is. That's what women say when they don't mean it, and they don't want to discuss it. It's a pretty great answer actually."

He grasped her shoulders and turned her to face him. Her breath caught at how close he was. She could practically feel the heat from his body. She could see the flecks of gray in his blue eyes. She could catch the faint scent of the shampoo that he'd used so many hours ago when they were back at her grandmother's small cabin. "What can I do to help you actually feel fine?"

She smiled. "You're very focused, aren't you?"

"Maybe." Caleb slid his hand along her jawline. "Or maybe it's just with you." He met her gaze. "I'm drawn to you, Jenna. I can't stop myself, and I don't want to."

She swallowed, her heart starting to race. "We don't even know who you are, Caleb."

"I know." His gaze went to her mouth.
